07-09-2018 Y5 - Ancient Greece Day

Friday 7th September 2018

Dear Parent/Carer,

In year 5, this term, our topic is ‘The Ancient Greeks’. As a way of providing your child with the best opportunity to find out about Ancient Greek life, we will be holding an Ancient Greek Day on Tuesday 18th September 2018.

‘History off the Page’ are coming into school to lead us in a day of hands-on workshops, to show us how the Ancient Greeks lived and what everyday life would have been like. On this day your child, will through role-play, experience life as it would have been living in the year 490 BC at the time of the Battle of Marathon, using authentic tools and materials whenever possible to learn skills as apprentices in a wide variety of workshops. As the day progresses, the children will get involved in the issues of the time, with the chance to participate in a range of cross-curricular activities. By the end of the day they will have a really good idea of how it felt like to be a Greek citizen at this pivotal date in history, which led to the rise of Athens as a major power in the ancient world. There will also be a storytelling session and the day will end with a traditional Greek ‘feast’.

To add to the authenticity of the day we would like all the children to arrive at school wearing a simple Ancient Greek outfit. Suggestions for costumes can be found on www.historyoffthepage.co.uk or there is a suggestion of simple costumes on the reverse of this letter.

This activity will take place during normal school hours and your child can follow their usual lunchtime routine. The school will be subsidising the cost of this activity from our fundraising (such as school discos) but we kindly ask for a contribution of £1.50 per child towards the cost of food for the Greek Feast. We would be grateful if you could return the consent form attached with your £1.50 payment by Friday 14th September.

Participation in this activity is dependent on good behaviour during normal school and if this is not up to the standard expected of all our pupils, they will not be able to take part.

Thank you for your continued support.

Yours sincerely

Miss Dobner, Mr Hayward and Mr Miles
