Lions

Welcome to the Lions Class!

Do you have any time to spare at all?

We are looking for volunteers to listen to readers or to test children on their word challenges across Year 1. If you have any time - even if it just 30 minutes a week - please come and speak to me. All help gratefully received.

What can you do to help your child at home?

Word Challenges

We have introduced word challenges to help the children learn to read high frequency words on sight. Often these words are tricky to read as they cannot be sounded out. The children will be tested on these words and will receive a certificate and small prize when they have learnt all 28 words in the booklet. In total, there are 5 books.

These will be put in the book bags so that the children can practise reading the words at home. Please ensure that the children bring their book bags to school every day.

Reading

We would be most grateful if you could read with your child at least 3 times per week and fill in the reading journal. You child will have 2 books in their book bag but feel free to read anything else that interests your child. We change books weekly but the library is open after school on Tuesdays if you would like to get a new book.

It is also important that the book bag is in school everyday.

  • Talk about the title of the book and the front cover. Can they guess what might happen in the story? What predictions can they make?
  • Ask questions about what has been read. Try to ask some questions that are harder to answer, where they have to think about the answer. Try asking questions that start with How or Why.
  • Talk about the pictures. What is happening? How might the characters be feeling? Why do they think that?
  • Stop at regular points and ask them to make predictions about what might happen next.
  • At the end of the story ask whether they liked the story and what they liked about or disliked about it.

Literacy

  • Alphabet - practise saying the alphabet. Can you child name all letters? Can they write down the letters? What about out of order?
  • Handwriting - practise writing the different letters. Can they sit the letters on the line? Are they drawing the tall letters? (b, d, h, k, l, t) Is the tail sitting below the line? (f, g, j, p, q, y) Do they know the capital AND lower case letters?
  • Syllables - can they clap out the number of syllables in a word? e.g. children has 2 syllables: chil-dren; piano has 3 syllables: pi-an-o
  • Adjectives - pick out some things that your child could describe. Can they use all of their senses? Ask things like: What does it look like? What does it sound like? What does it smell like? What does it feel like? What does it taste like?

Maths

  • Practise counting on and back to 100
  • Practise counting on and back in 10s to 100
  • Count out  different objects making sure they count carefully by pointing to, or moving, each object one at a time as they count. Can they say what one more or one less would be?
  • Practise writing the numbers 0 - 20 forming each number correctly.
  • Practise simple adding and subtracting
  • Practise doubles to double 10
  • Practise halves of even numbers to half of 20

Feel free to come and talk to us about any of these.
