Dear Parents/Carers
We shall soon be teaching a unit of sex and relationship education to all Year 5 classes. As part of these lessons, we shall be discussing various elements of child development and puberty in both boys and girls. Within these lessons, there will be a focus on:
We shall also be using a BBC Active CD Rom, which has been produced specifically to support the teaching of this to Year 5 and 6 children. If you wish to discuss the content of these lessons, or view the CD ROM footage before the lessons commence, then please make an appointment to speak with Mrs Walker.
In addition to these sessions, the children will be learning about human lifecycles and gestation periods of mammals through science lessons which is a statutory element of the National curriculum.
Parents may, if they wish, withdraw their child from all or part of the sex education programme but not from these elements, which are part of the National Curriculum programmes of study. Parents wishing to withdraw their child from aspects of sex education should do so in writing to the Chair of Governors.
Yours sincerely,
(Year 5 Teachers)
