Phonics News 2021/2022

Autumn Term 2020-21

As a school, we are very excited about Phonics this year. We understand that a lot of our children might be feeling a bit worried about all of the Phonics lessons they have missed over the past few months but, we are confident that our fantastic scheme of work ‘The Song of Sounds’ combined with targeted teaching, will make sure the children quickly catch up.

As many of you will know, each year we carry out a Phonics Screening to assess the children’s levels in this area. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 we were unable to perform this assessment with our previous Year 1 children. We would like to let you know that this screening will now be carried out before Christmas for the children in Year 2. Our Year 2 teachers have worked really hard to put together lessons to make sure the children will be ready for their screening and we are confident that they will achieve their expected scores.

There is lots you can do to help support your children with their Phonics at home. On our website we have links to the Song of Sounds which the children love to sing, maybe they could teach everybody at home the actions! There are also lots of fantastic Phonics games online, we use a lot in school. If you need any help at all, your child’s teacher is always available to answer any questions you may have about Phonics.

What did Ofsted say about our Phonics?

'The proportion of pupils reaching the expected standard in the Year 1 statutory phonics screening check has risen. This is because of the clearly organised way in which phonics is taught in Years 1 and 2. Pupils make good progress in learning letters and the sounds they make. The dip in previous years has been because of pupils with English as an additional language joining the school in Year 1 who were new to learning English. Current assessment data suggests there will be improvement again this year.'
