What is the EAL Quality Award?

The EAL Quality Mark is an award made to schools by the EAL Academy on their achievements in meeting the needs of pupils learning English as an additional language.

It is available as a bronze, silver or gold award, allowing schools the opportunity to re-visit the award and build on their practice over time.

Any school with pupils on roll who are learning English as an additional language is eligible to apply.

How does it work?

The EAL Quality Mark is awarded based on a school’s self-evaluation of its EAL provision. The EAL Academy team provide step by step guidance and validate findings through a half day visit from one of their team.

Schools will examine their practice in three key areas:

  1. leadership and management
  2. teaching, learning and assessment
  3. working with parents and the community

Schools are evaluated on their ability to give all learners the opportunity for rapid and sustained improvement and to deliver an inclusive curriculum which promotes language development alongside learning.

On successful completion, the EAL Academy provides an award certificate to display in school and the EAL Quality Mark logo which can be included in the school's literature and website.
