11-06-2024 Year 5 Bikeability

11th June 2024

Dear Parent/Carer,

We are delighted to inform you of an exciting opportunity available for children in Year 5. We have been successful in securing cycle training provided through Suffolk County Council known as ‘Bikeabillty’. The training, which is fully funded, will consist of both the Level 1 and 2 of the National Standards of cycling.

Your child will be trained by Cycle Training East Instructors who are fully accredited to ‘Bikeability National Standards’. The course consists of 4 x 2-hour training sessions, which will take place at school and the surrounding areas during the morning and afternoon of Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10 July 2024.

Your child will be assessed on their skills in an off-road environment i.e. school playground (level 1). Once confident with your child’s cycle skills the trainers, accompanied by a member of staff, will commence training on quiet local roads where your child will be instructed in all basic manoeuvres (Level 2). Children who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate and badge to the appropriate level.

Spaces are limited to 12 pupils. Therefore, places will be allocated on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis. To be eligible for this course, pupils must be able to confidently ride a bike without stabilisers. They will need a roadworthy bicycle (please see attached Bike Check Notes for Parents).  Your child must also wear a suitable cycle helmet.  Please check your child’s bicycle prior to the course to ensure it fits your child correctly and is safe to ride. More information will be given to pupils nearer the course e.g. where to leave their bikes, where to meet etc.

Pupils may wear suitable non-school uniform clothing. This should be comfortable with narrow bottomed trousers (or cycle clips worn), trainers are ideal footwear for cycling. Training may take place in wet weather so a lightweight waterproof jacket may be advisable.  Your child may need a lightweight rucksack for carrying items such as water bottle, jacket etc.

If you would like your child to take part in this course, please complete both the reply slip and the attached consent form and return these to school by Friday 28th June 2024.

An email will be sent out confirming whether your child has been successful in obtaining a place.

Any questions, please do not hesitate to contact myself at school.

Thank you for your continued support.
