PE and Sports Premium

What is the PE and Sport Premium?

During the 2013/14 academic year, the Government introduced funding for the Primary PE and Sport Premium for all primary schools across England. Designed to improve the provision of physical education and school sport, the Government initially committed to allocate PE and Sport Premium funding until 2016. Subsequently, Jointly funded by the Departments for Education, Health, and Culture, Media and Sport (DfE, DH, DCMS), the Government has invested a further £450 million on improving Physical Education (PE) in schools. Funding for each school is allocated, based on the number of pupils within school, to spend on developing and delivering a sustainable high quality PE provision. Schools can choose how they use the funding, for example to:

  • Hire specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers during PE lessons.

  • Support and involve the least active children by running after-school sports clubs and holiday clubs.

  • Provide resources and training courses in PE and sport for teachers.

  • Organise sports competitions or increase pupils’ participation in PE.

  • Arrange sports activities with other schools.

Additionally, the PE and Sport Premium funding may also be used to raise attainment in primary school swimming by:

  • Professional development and training available to upskill staff to support high quality swimming and water safety lessons for their pupils.
  • Provide additional top-up swimming lessons to pupils who have not been able to meet the national curriculum requirements for swimming and water safety.

Our vision for the PE and Sport Premium

At Whitehouse Community Primary School we are committed to spending the PE and Sport Premium funding in a sustainable way that will positively impact on the health and well being of our pupils.
