SMSC codes linked to our Multilingual Day

Year 6 SMSC - Multilingual Day

To begin the day, children who speak different languages in each class became the teachers and taught the key phrases of 'Hello' and 'Thank you' in their own languages. A wide range of languages were shared from Urdu, Kurdish, Romanian, Portuguese to Greek, Yoruba and Bengali. The children had lots of fun practising and walking around the room, greeting and thanking members of their class. Then, the children broke off into groups to learn numbers 1-10 in the varied languages, all taught by the children themselves.

Following this, Year 6 went into the hall where Miss Payne, through drama, shared the story of Little Red Riding Hood fully in German. The children loved getting involved with actions, and practising the language. Danke, Miss Payne!

The afternoon was spent learning British Sign Language. Children were challenged to learn to sign their own name and then go head-to-head to sign for a partner and see if they could solve the word that had been signed.

Year 3

On Friday, Year 3 enjoyed taking part in a range of activities linked to culture and languages as part of our SMSC Multilingual day. The children had a chance to share their own culture and language with each other and spent time learning some basic phrases from their friends. They then created fact files from the information they had learnt. In the afternoon, they were challenged to create a piece of pop art linking to a country, culture or language they had learnt about today.

Year 3

Key Stage 1 SMSC Multilingual Day

The children in Key Stage one had a fantastic time during our whole school Multilingual day. In year 1, the children discovered that Makaton and Sign Language are also languages that people use to communicate. They worked very hard to learn how to sign their name as well as using Makaton to sign a song.  Another activity included learning how to say hello in lots of different languages and, finally, they identified all the languages that are spoken in the school and used a map to find where these languages are spoken.

While in year 2, the day began by finding out the origin of some of the languages that are spoken in school, followed by using Digimap to find the countries on a world map. After that, they moved on to learning about countries' flags and had a task to match the national greeting to the national flag of that country. Soon after, they had the opportunity to learn how to write in Arabic, and were shocked to learn that the Arabic alphabet has 28 letters and reads from right to left. In the afternoon, they had lots of fun creating 2D artworks influenced by Africa using the African dot technique.
