Reading At Home

From Year 3, children use the Accelerated Reader scheme for reading. It is a computer programme that helps manage and monitor children's independent reading practice. Children pick a book at their own level and when finished, take a short quiz on the book. Passing a quiz means scoring from 80% upwards. Children are encouraged to develop at their own pace and to succeed in achieving certificates as they progress through the Accelerated Reader programme.

To develop reading skills, it is important for children to read for at least 35 minutes each day. Some of this is done at school. However, children are expected to read at home as well.

Discussion around books is extremely important. Children are encouraged to talk about what they have read. This happens in English and Guided Reading lessons, as well as when children are preparing to quiz.

Please read and discuss books regularly with your child.
