25-03-2025 Year 4 Victorian School

25th March 2025

Year 4 – Visit to Victorian School, Great Cressingham

Dear Parent/Carer,

We are writing to inform you about an exciting trip we have organised for our Year 4 children. To support our topic based on the key question ‘What was life like for a Victorian Child?’, we will be visiting a Victorian school.  The school was built in 1840 and has been restored to its original Victorian style so this trip will give the children a chance to engage in an authentic Victorian experience.

As space in the school is limited, the classes will be going on different days:

Hedgehogs – Tuesday 3rd June

Squirrels – Thursday 5th June

Foxes – Monday 9th June

We will leave school at 8.30am, therefore children will need to arrive at school by 8.15am and meet in Marlow Road Hall. We aim to return to school for approximately 3pm. Your child will require a snack, a packed lunch and a drink (no glass bottles, sweets or fizzy drinks please).  Our school kitchen will provide a packed lunch both for children who are entitled to Free School Meals and for those who pay (the cost is £2.52) so please indicate on the attached form if you would like to take up this offer.

We would like to encourage your child to dress in simple ‘Poor Victorian’ clothing. Boys should wear a plain long-sleeved white shirt, dark trousers tucked into knee length plain socks and a waistcoat (if you have one). Girls should wear a white shirt, long skirt or plain dark dresses with a shawl.  Long hair should be plaited with plain ribbons and away from the face. Both boys and girls should wear plain dark shoes or trainers.  Hats and/or bonnets are also optional.  There should be no nail varnish, jewellery or digital watches.  If you have any concerns about sourcing an outfit or if your child is worried about this, please come and speak to us.  There is no obligation for you to purchase fancy dress costumes -  we are more than happy to see home made efforts!

The cost per child is a voluntary contribution of £10.00 which covers the cost of coach travel and educational activities.  This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to experience ‘hands-on’ history.

At Whitehouse, we value the importance of trips as they help the children to engage with their learning and provide opportunities for the children to deepen their understanding through first hand experiences. Please remember that educational trips are not intended to be optional as they are part of our school curriculum.

Payments can be made either via the school office or on Arbor.  Please return the enclosed consent form and indicate whether you would like the school to provide a packed lunch for your child by Monday 5th May 2025.

Thank you for your continued support.
